Audible is perhaps the most popular service which provides audiobooks to users worldwide. In order to tap into the benefits of the company’s extensive inventory, you need to subscribe to one of the company’s plans. Depending on the plan, you simply pick your title or titles and download the book to your phone for enjoyment.

If you want to listen to Audible without using data, you need to plan ahead. Using the internet or a wi-fi connection, choose the audiobook you want to listen to and download it to your smartphone or other audio player device.

The most challenging part of listening to Audible is choosing which book you want to enjoy first. Audible uses data in two ways, either the data is downloaded to your smartphone, or you can stream audiobooks, a process which uses data. So, to avoid using data, download your chosen book title using wifi and enjoy listening to it with no internet connection needed.

The download process

To make use of Audible without data usage follow the steps below.

  1.  Connect to a Wi-Fi network. Do not use cellular data.
  2. Be sure that you have downloaded the Audible app, which is available on Windows 8, Windows 10, Android, and iOS.
  3. Open the app and sign into your account.
  4. Navigate to the ‘Library’ page. This is next to ‘Home’ on your app screen.
  5. The Library page lists all of the audiobooks which you have purchased under your account.
  6. In order to download the book you have selected, tap on the white down-pointing arrow at the bottom right of the audiobook’s cover image. Alternatively, tap the three horizontal black dots next to the audiobook, then choose ‘Download’ from the menu. If no arrow shows, you have probably already downloaded the audiobook, and can listen to it offline.
  7. As you download, a circle will appear on the cover, showing your download progress. When the circle is full, the download is complete.
  8. Once the download is finished, you can play the audiobook you have downloaded at any time, without using any of your data.

Audible uses data in order to download or stream audiobooks. Streaming means that the file data is being transmitted in short sections to your device as it is played. Downloading, on the other hand, saves the entire audiobook file to your device for later offline use. Once the download is complete, a file can be enjoyed with no requirement for an internet connection or for draining data from your data plan.

What is Audible?

Audible was launched in 1995, originally producing a proprietary digital audio player which consumers could buy to listen to favorite audiobooks. The technology at the time was limited, so only about two hours of audio could be held at a time. By 2008, the firm ventured into audiobook production and was acquired that same year by Amazon.

The Audible catalog has more than 200,000 audio programs, making Audible the largest audiobook producer and retailer in the United States. The extensive catalog includes titles from audiobook publishers, broadcasters, entertainers, magazine and newspaper publishers, and business information providers.

The content includes books of all genres, as well as radio shows (classic and current), speeches, interviews, stand-up comedy, and audio versions of periodicals such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Consumers can purchase from Audible in the same way most online retailers operate. There are also Audible membership plans including Audible Plus and Audible Premium Plus. In addition, there is a 30-day free trial which allows users to try out the features and options from the company.

Audible is available on a variety of devices, including Windows and Mac computers, all functioning Kindles, all Alexa devices, Amazon Fire tablets with OS5 or newer, the SanDisk Clip Jam, The Bones Milestone 312, and the Victor Reader Stream.

According to the Audible website, Audible is the leading creator and provider of premium audio storytelling, enriching the lives of millions of listeners every day. With the customer-centric approach to technological innovation and superior programming, Audible has reinvented a media category, and is the driving force behind today’s audio entertainment revolution.

Audible is perhaps the oldest and largest of the audiobook producers. It also has a large catalog of podcasts available. In addition to narrators who have the skills and experience to narrate classic and current titles, authors, and public figures in the entertainment industry serve as narrators.
